Following on from my video guides, I am always asked what I recommend for carrying in the cold. So I thought I would do a wee blog on options, but include options for all budgets so it helps everyone hopefully. I will include discount codes if I have them and let you know what's available for hire too. I've done all the work so you don't have to!
Let's start from the bottom up; FEET!
BUDGET - Knitted booties, everyone who has a baby will have these at some point. You can also pick them up in most charity shops, paired with some cosy socks, they are ideal. I've also heard good things about fleece booties from H&M and supermarkets. FREE or up to £5
AFFORDABLE - These wee winter boots are ideal, easy to get feet into, and stay on too! £10.99 at Estamico Baby Boys Girls Hook and Loop Winter Warm Boots Crib Shoes Gray 12-18 Months : Amazon.co.uk: Shoes & Bags
SPLASH OUT - Mamalila softshell booties, these are lovely, cosy and waterproof. The high boot style covers that wee gap to trousers too and they adjust to stay on. £16.95 from Mamalila Softshell Booties Allrounder Baby | Love To Be Natural
FOR TODDLER - I recommend the Stonz booties, they are not so much for staying warm, but wearing over soft shoes for wee walkers. Great to keep feet dry when they are at that toddling stage but too wee for big boots. £30. Buy the Stonz Toddler Booties at KIDLY UK
Now for LEGS
BUDGET - Grab those cosy bed socks you have, and cut the toes off, they make great leg warmers for wee ones! You can also pick up some fluffy ones from the pound shop. FREE OR £1
AFFORDABLE - Babywearing socks from Mel at Wrapahug, these are great, suitable for small and roll up for toddlers, We love ours! £12 Babywearing Socks – Wrap a Hug Sling Library East London
SPLASH OUT - These alpaca wool leg warmers are also one of our favourites. They are so cozy and grow with baby. They are great for toddlers too keeping those wee ankles warm when running about. £18.95 Legwarmers Baby Alpaca | Love To Be Natural
Let's now look at keeping those wee heads cozy.
BUDGET - Again, when you have a baby, most people will gift baby hats and wool knitted hats. You can't go wrong with these, if you have no knitted ones, then try double up on cotton ones for layers. You can also pick knitted ones up cheap in most charity shops. FREE OR FEW £
AFFORDABLE - Maxomorra velour balaclava hats and bonnets with tie straps. We use the bonnets when it's starting to get chilly and they are great as they cover ears and tie on. The velour lining is so cosy. £12.90-£13.90 Hats & Scarves – Strawberry Meerkat Boutique
SPLASH OUT - Merino elephant hoods. These are our personal favourite as they are thin and so warm due to the merino wool. I love the wide neck that tucks into clothing to prevent cold necks. They come in two sizes, our size one lasted 2 years and the size two is on its second year and will last longer. £22.95 ManyMonths Merino Elephant Hood | Love To Be Natural
WATERPROOF OPTION - A cozy and waterproof option, especially if you live somewhere wetter, like Scotland! The softshell elephant hoods are fluffy and cozy inside and also have a wide neck to tuck in. £18.95 ManyMonths Merino Elephant Hood | Love To Be Natural
Now let's have a look at covers that work with all slings and carriers,
BUDGET - Do you have an older child? Use one of their rain jackets and wrap it around your carrier, tie the arms around the wrap or straps. (You can see this in action on my video tutorial) Or you can pick up a cheap waterproof jacket and do the same, if you have the skills, you could cut off the arms and sew on some clips or straps. FREE OR FEW £
AFFORDABLE - I really like the Bundlebean covers, you can get just the waterproof cover or the fleece-lined version. They velcro across to attach, making it easy to put on. I have both options available for hire too. £29.99-£39.99 Use my code coorie5 at BundleBean Rain Cover - Bundle Of Love
SPLASH OUT - The Hug Me cover, these are customisable and really pretty. My one has a lovely globe and weather design, the lining is yellow fleece. The hood is detachable and has a hand cosy pocket. This one is available to hire too! You can get your own with the discount code COORIE £46-£48 (2) Annie's Accessories | Facebook
And finally, lets look at jackets. This one won't be as easy as three categories, so I'm going to split it into a few more and do it by price points instead
FREE - I know many people who continue to use their maternity jackets quite happily, also if your partner wears a bigger size, why not use their jacket? This is not as easy when you start to back carry but its an option
£30 or under - The Asda maternity jacket is very popular, again not suitable for back carrying, but a great budget option. £30 Maternity Coats | Women | George at ASDA
Under £100 - The Numbat Go is the ideal waterproof jacket, It offers front and back carrying and makes a great jacket alone. The best part, is that this jacket folds up and becomes a wee bag. Great on those days that you may need a jacket but don't want to carry one!
